About IEEE Smart Village
IEEE Smart Village (ISV) is the member-led, not-for-profit, humanitarian outreach program of IEEE and one of the four priority initiatives of the IEEE Foundation. ISV empowers off-grid communities with a family income of less than $2 USD per day. Using the three pillars of Energy, Education, and Enterprise, ISV applies a system-of-systems approach to build smart, sustainable communities. With a focus on field implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, ISV has created a network of experienced partners and village leaders engaged in community micro-utility infrastructure projects, humanitarian technology transfer, community-based education, and holistically sustainable enterprise. ISV aims to empower 50 million people by 2025 with plans for expansion in Africa, India, South America, and Asia.
About the Sustainable Development Goals
The Sustainable Development Goals, adopted in September 2015 by 193 countries, give a 15 year path forward to create actions and collaborations to preserve our planet, design social programs to increase equity, food for all, build safe and healthy communities, and reduce the effects of climate change. To accomplish the Sustainable Development Goals, communities and volunteers must first learn what the goals are and the then work collectively to achieve them.
“With the 17 goals, everybody on this planet can help do something. You no longer have a reason not to do something. You are in the driver’s seat, and if you cannot start a project yourself, find someone who already has a project and help them. For every SDG, there is some small action that you can take every day and have a positive global impact.”
